This page summarizes the Select Spectra tool


Motivation

Numerous functions in the Perception Studio program need spectra as input. Like the CCI Extract method which unscrambles selected spectra into principle patterns.
The Select Spectra Tool provides access to spectra from a hyperspectral cube by selecting pixel positions in the scene.

Function

Per selection process a spectra set is generated. A spectra set can consist of multiple individual spectra per hyperspectral cube. Typically per spectra set the spectral representation of one individual object in the scene is described.
Spectral variation over the object is captured by selecting multiple pixel positions.
In addition to the spectral variance information, a spectra set has a name and a color used for visualization.

About the Select Spectra Tool

The Select Tool allows to select spectra sets from hyperspectral data cubes. Read here how

  • to add or delete a spectra set
  • to edit attributes like its name or color
  • to edit the position of your selection afterwards
  • to erase a selection
  • to delete a spectra set

The tool is accessible from the ribbon in several perspectives of the Perception Studio program.
The following image shows the Select Spectra Tool for hyperspectral data of various plastic plates.

In the main view of the tool the Preview feature image gives access to the spectral information of various plastic plates. On the bottom a graph is located showing all selected spectra sets. A spectra set is a set of single spectra originating from single pixel positions in a hyperspectral scene. Each spectra set has a name as well as a colour. In the main view selected pixel positions are denoted by markers. The color of the markers corresponds to the color of the spectra shown in the Spectra graph. Left to the Spectra graph all selected spectra sets are listed.

A spectra is visualized by a thick line and a surrounding shadow. If the broadness of the shadow is small, also the variation of spectral information over the pixel selection in the scene is small. In the example above, the spectra set PVC in cyan color shows some variation with its surrounding shadow. In contrast, the spectra of all selected pixels on the PET object (green color) are very similar (no shadow).

Add a Spectra Set

To add a new spectra set click on the New Spectra Set button and specify its name.
Click in the scene to select pixels which should belong to the new spectra set. Make sure the Append Single Spectra option is activated (pencil icon).

Edit the pixel selection

Append a pixel selection (pencil icon)

Activate the "append" option to append single selections to a spectra set by clicking in the scene. This is the icon on the top of the list showing a pencil.

Erase a pixel selection (rubber icon)

Activate the "erase" option to erase single pixel selections. This is the icon on the top of the list showing an eraser.

Change the color

To change the color of a spectra set, click on the colored rectangle next to a spectra set name.

Rename

To rename a spectra set double click on its name.

Delete

To delete a spectra set click on the X symbol next to the spectra sets name.

Done

When done, press the Done button to close the tool.

Workflow

  • Select a cube of interest in the current perspective (like Explore or Model).
  • Click on Select Spectra icon within the ribbon of the perspectives to open the Select Spectra Tool.
  • Specify the name of the first spectra set to be selected.
  • Select pixels on the first object of interest.
  • Set up an appropriate name and color.
  • Click on New Spectra Set button to continue the selection of an additional spectra set.
  • Edit the pixel selection afterwards (add, erase).
  • Inspect the representation of selected spectra sets in the Spectra view.
  • Click Done button to close the tool.
